CHAPTER 16

You need to come back to the house.

Wynona frowned and put a hand on Rascal’s arm. “Hang on,” she told him. “Violet’s talking.”

Rascal put on his lights, then jerked the wheel and parked half on, half off of the sidewalk.

Wynona gave him a look.

“Perks,” he reminded her with a wolfish grin.

Rolling her eyes, Wynona put her concentration back on her familiar. Violet? What’s going on? Are you okay?

I’m fine, but there’s someone here you need to see.

Can you tell me who? Wynona pressed. I’ve had enough nasty surprises in this case, I’d rather not have another one.

I don’t know her name, Violet said. But Lusgu let her in and she was the stupid incubus’s secretary. She snickered, but Wynona gasped.

“Cookie?” Wynona said out loud, looking at Rascal with wide eyes.

Glancing over his shoulder, he roared the truck into action, causing a few screeches from angry drivers and headed out toward Wynona’s house.

Keep her there, Wynona instructed Violet. We need to talk to her.

I thought as much, Violet said smugly. Lusgu has her occupied, but she’s shaking like a leaf and her image keeps flickering in and out. I’m not sure what kind of magic she has, but she’s barely holding on.

“Right.” Wynona took a long, cleansing breath, but it did nothing to calm her racing heart. We’ll be there as soon as we can, she assured her familiar.

Sounds good.

Wynona held onto the bar above her seat with all she was worth as Rascal navigated the city streets, then hit the gas once they were outside the limits. Living so close to the Grove of Secrets let her enjoy peace, quiet and a little extra magic. But it also meant that in times like this, when they were in a hurry, it seemed to take forever to reach her cabin.

With dust billowing behind them, Rascal finally slammed on the breaks in her gravel driveway. “Hang on,” he said in a harsh tone, jumping from his seat. He ran around to her side and whipped open the passenger door. “Sorry about how rough it was,” he said, helping her down with a gentleness that was at odds with the tone in his voice. After closing the door, he grabbed his stun gun and made sure Wynona was behind him.

“Do you really think that’s necessary?” Wynona asked, her jaw dropping.

Rascal nodded. “She ran out of a crime scene and has been missing ever since. Innocent people don’t just disappear for days on end.”

Wynona nodded, understanding his logic, but she didn’t believe that petite creature could have anything to do with Mr. Braxet’s death. Nonetheless, she followed Rascal up to the front door, where he walked in carefully.

Soft, murmured voices were coming from the kitchen area and she and Rascal headed that way. The clinking of a teacup let Wynona know that Lusgu had taken care of her guest in every way possible and she felt a soft lurch of affection for the brownie who obviously had a soft heart, despite his grumpy behavior.
